I am a musicologist and performing musician. As a scholar, I focus on modernist music (especially the music of Anton Webern) and its performance and reception in the United States, as well as intersections of modernism and early music. As a performer, I focus on early bowed instruments (including the Baroque double bass, viola da gamba, and violone) and the music of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. I have performed with ensembles such as the Handel and Haydn Society, Arcadia Players, Trinity Wall Street, and New York Baroque Incorporated, and collaborate often with Seven Times Salt.
I hold a Ph.D. in musicology from Cornell University, and for the last few years I have served as Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley, where I direct the University Baroque Ensemble and also teach in the American Studies program. I am a member of the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, the Viola da Gamba Society of America, and the Association of Anglican Musicians. For samples of my work, more information on my background, or details on upcoming performances, see the pages linked above or peruse my CV. Feel free to contact me with any questions!
